Is Consumption a Black Box in Public Policy?
This SoLS Conversation examines the impact of affluence in India and its connection to three critical crises: environmental sustainability, extreme inequality, and psychological well-being. The panel explores how the concept of the “good life,” increasingly influenced by consumerism and neoliberal values, shapes public policy. Despite the significant role of consumption in policy-making, it remains underexplored, hindering sustainable and equitable development. The discussion emphasizes the need for a fundamental shift in public policy and societal values to address these pressing challenges effectively.
