CLUB Savera
Clubs and extracurricular activities are a cornerstone of student life at any University. In addition to academics, University life is meant to allow young, enthusiastic leaders to explore their passions and engage their interests. Today, leading universities around the world take into consideration students’ extracurricular performance along with academics and entrance test scores before admitting students. At BMU, within the first three months of operations, students had already set up 25 clubs and organisations, including an NGO. In this issue we feature the Savera, a student-run NGO.
The most important thing for the development of this world is the education of the children.
With this thought in mind, aspiring engineers and future business leaders at BMU took the initiative to iron out the widespread inequalities in society. Coming with the idea of forming a body strictly dedicated to the welfare of society, the Savera Social Service Club came into existence.
Why set up an NGO? We believe that through our club, we can work together in enlightening the lives of the poor and lesser privileged children, making them as valuable and capable as any other citizen of our nation. And our endeavors have proven fruitful; the children we have been teaching passed their examinations with flying colors — with a significant 20% rise in their average scores, achieving scores as high as 99.7%.
Apart from working in the field of education, we also indulge in social welfare activities to make our nation better. We started FEEDUCATE, a campaign that ensured all the extra food made by Sodexo would be disbursed to poor children whose parents couldn't afford to feed their wards twice a day.
Savera also celebrated Diwali last year with the children living in slums, where we held a celebratory dinner as well as a cultural program which, in their own words, the children "will never forget in their lives." Savera plans to expand in the future, gradually bringing nearby areas under its radar.
People often tend to forget that others might not be as privileged as us, and we are helping the less privileged get that chance.
There is no power greater than knowledge and education is the tool that helps us achieve that. Let the tool not be limited to the financially forward, let there be no inequality, let peace and knowledge prevail in the world.
