Nari Shakti Gains Momentum: Union Budget Provides Crucial Boost for Women’s Empowerment. Time to Shift the Narrative

Amidst the rich diversity of India's cultural fabric, one thread that stands out vividly is the resilience and strength of its females. Yet woven within this strength are the complex patterns of inequality and discrimination that have persisted for generations. However, the winds of alteration are blowing, and women around the nation are breaking barriers, shattering stereotypes, and forging their paths towards Empowerment.

To support the wind, the Government of India has stepped into the battleground with the Union Budget 2024-25. In this budget, the GOI unveils a spotlight illuminating projects dedicated to promoting the growth and Empowerment of women and youth across the country. The momentum for ‘Nari Shakti’ (women empowerment) has been perceptible, and the budget announcement echoes a bold commitment to building upon this momentum for a better and more vibrant future.

    Myriad of Initiatives

For over a decade, the Indian government has championed the women's empowerment cause via many different avenues, remarkably in entrepreneurship, improving quality of life, and ensuring dignity for women. One tremendous achievement is the colossal success of Mudra Yojana, with a loan of 30 crores allocated to women entrepreneurs, catalysing economic growth and fostering financial independence. Also, the noteworthy increases in female enrollment in higher education by 28% and a significant 43% representation in STEM, aka Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics fields demonstrate a substantial stride towards gender parity.

Another highlight has been the reservation of one-third of seats for women in the “Lok Sabha” and “State legislative assemblies,” with a commendable allocation of over seventy per cent of homes under the PM Awas Yojana in rural areas to women as sole or joint owners. Undeniably, these measures not only reinforce women’s dignity but also contribute to their increased participation in the workforce, promoting a more balanced and equitable society.

The Lakhpati Didi initiative has surfaced as a metamorphic force in rural India, with eighty-three lakh Self-Help Groups empowering nine crore women and revolutionising the socio-economic landscape. Remembering their monumental success, the decision to raise the Lakhpati Didi from 2 crore to 3 crore is a testament to the programme's impact. These courageous women aren’t just independent entrepreneurs; rather, they are idols, inspirations, and torchbearers for other aspiring females to break free from economic constraints.

Further, the 2024-25 budget signals a holistic approach toward child and maternal care by consolidating ample schemes housed under “Saksham Anganwadi and Poshan 2.0.” This move aims to synergise efforts for much-improved nutrition delivery, early childhood care, and overall development, demonstrating a commitment to building a healthier and more vigorous future generation.

    Augmenting Healthcare Inclusivity

Under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, extending healthcare coverage to all ASHA workers, Anganwadi Employees, and Helpers is a vital step in recognising these frontline workers' pivotal role in the well-being of entire communities. This ensures their welfare and strengthens the overall healthcare infrastructure, promoting a more resilient society.

The Union Budget 2024 sets the tone for an 'Amrit Kaal'—a time of wealth and well-being for the nation. The emphasis on women and youth empowerment is not just a policy; it is a recognition of responsibility — 'Kartavya Kaal.'

The budget does not just allocate funds; it invests in a future where every woman and youth’s potential is realised for the greater good of the nation. Moreover, it lays the foundation for a society where women stand as equals, leaders, and contributors to the nation's progress—a society where Empowerment knows no bounds.

Join the Movement for Gender Equality

Women’s Empowerment is not just a goal to be achieved but a journey that requires collective effort, dedication, and perseverance. The path towards empowerment in India is fraught with the utmost challenges, but it is also adorned with opportunities for progress and transformation. Addressing systemic inequalities, promoting education and economic independence, and challenging cultural norms can create a future where every female can live, learn, and lead on her own terms.

Together, let’s continue to champion the cause of women’s Empowerment and develop a more inclusive and equitable society for all.
